He earned his medical degree, with honors, and doctorate degree in immunology from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine in Illinois. He then completed his residency in general surgery and cardiothoracic surgery at Duke University Medical Center in Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina, where he also completed a postdoctoral cardiovascular research fellowship.
